Amethyst is one of the best-known and most powerful varieties of the mineral quartz (SiO₂), distinguished by its beautiful violet color, which is caused by traces of iron (Fe).

It is a stone of immense protective power and high spiritual vibration. Amethyst works effectively as a shield, protecting against negative energies and psychic attacks. Closely related to this is its role as a “stone of the mind,” helping to relieve stress, calm fears, anger, and anxiety, and transform negative emotions into love and wisdom.

Its Greek name amethustos literally means “not intoxicated” or “sober.” This symbolism originates from ancient traditions, where it was believed that drinking from amethyst vessels protected one from drunkenness. Today, amethyst is highly valued for its supportive role in overcoming addictions and strengthening sobriety.

Amethyst is strongly associated with spiritual purity and meditation. It acts on the upper energy centers—the Third Eye and the Crown Chakra—enhancing intuition, clarity, and focus. It is also known for its powerful healing properties, helping to alleviate insomnia and nightmares, which is why it is traditionally placed under the pillow.

Historically, amethyst was a symbol of high status, favored by kings and incorporated into episcopal insignia. Mineralogically, it is a hard stone (Mohs hardness 7) and is commonly found in geodes; the largest known specimen weighs an astonishing 13 tons. It is important to note that prolonged exposure to light can cause it to fade, while heat treatment can change its color to yellow, creating citrine.
