        Tradition and intention

        The spiritual dimension of cacao

In the Andean and Amazonian tradition, cacao is called “the medicine of the heart”. Indigenous teachers say that cacao amplifies intention – so before drinking, set what you want to bring into your ritual.

        ♡
        Opening the heart
In tradition it symbolises the release of emotional blocks, the healing of old wounds and opening to compassion, gratitude and love.
        ☀
        Clarity and focus
Many people include a cacao ritual instead of their morning coffee, as a moment of calm and focus on their intention.
        ✦
        Creativity and introspection
In a ritual setting it is associated with meditation, introspection and creative work.

        Chakras in intention

        Heart (Anahata)
The main centre with which cacao resonates in tradition – opening the heart, receiving and giving love.
        Third eye (Ajna)
Symbolises insight and focus during yoga or meditation.
        Sacral chakra (Svadhisthana)
Associated with the flow of creative energy and emotional connection.

The effects described come from tradition and personal experience; they are not scientifically proven claims.

        Laboratory-tested Chuncho cacao

We had the Chuncho cacao paste tested at the Eurofins Food Testing Slovakia laboratory. Below are the values the laboratory measured in a sample in March 2026.

        Cadmium (Cd)
        0.26 mg/kg
A heavy metal that occurs naturally in soil.
        Lead (Pb)
        0.12 mg/kg
A heavy metal monitored in food.
        Mercury (Hg)
        < 0.010 mg/kg
Below the method's limit of quantification.
        Ochratoxin A
        < 0.25 µg/kg
A mycotoxin (from mould), below the limit of quantification.
        Salmonella
        Not detected in 25 g
        Microbiological analysis.
        Pesticides (screening)
        Below the limit of quantification
Except for a trace of diethyltoluamide (DEET), see note.

Note on DEET: the laboratory found 0.019 mg/kg of diethyltoluamide in the sample. It is an active ingredient of repellents that may have reached the beans through contact during harvest. It is not regulated by the pesticide residues regulation.

Cacao is a natural product; the values above come from a single sample and may differ slightly between batches.

Where the Andes meet the Amazon

Our cacao comes from the Quillabamba, La Convención area in the Cusco region – a place called “the pearl of the jungle”. A subtropical climate, fertile soil and plenty of water create exceptional conditions for cacao here.

        An ancient variety
Chuncho was grown in the Cusco valleys long before the Europeans arrived.
        Processed by hand
Local farmers process the cacao by hand. Ceremonial Chuncho is harvested only once a year.
        Guardians of tradition
Local communities have protected the original cacao trees and the genetic diversity of Chuncho for generations.
        FAQ

        Your questions

What is the difference between ceremonial cacao and cacao powder? +
Ceremonial cacao is a paste of whole beans with all of their cocoa butter (45–50%), which gives it a fuller, creamier taste and texture. In powder, part of the butter is pressed out, so it mixes more easily. You can find the powder as Chuncho cacao powder.
How much cacao should I use per drink? +
Usually 15–25 g for an everyday drink and 30–55 g for a ceremonial one – always for about 200 ml of liquid. Start with a smaller serving.
How is the cacao processed? +
The cacao beans go through harvesting, fermentation, drying and gentle roasting. They are then ground whole on stones into a smooth paste – without separating the cocoa butter.
How should I store the cacao? +
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Always reseal the pack well after opening so the cacao keeps its aroma and taste.
Which pack sizes do you offer? +
We offer Chuncho ceremonial cacao in the sizes 200 g tablet, 300 g, 500 g and 1 kg. You can also find them all in the category Ceremonial cacao.
Why do the laboratory results differ between the paste and the powder? +
The paste and the powder are different products and each was tested as a separate sample. Cadmium occurs naturally in soil, so its content differs between samples, batches and products. The values shown come from a single sample from March 2026 and are not a guarantee for every batch. We will gladly provide the full report – write to us.
        How much is shipping? +
Delivery options and prices depend on your country. The exact price and any free-shipping threshold are shown in your cart and at checkout. See our shipping policy.
