Cumaru — ash of the teacher tree
Rapé Cumaru is a grounding blend of the Huni Kuin people of Acre, Brazil, prepared with ash from the bark of the mighty Cumaru tree (Dipteryx odorata) – the tree that also gives the world the fragrant tonka bean.
It is a fine, grey Rapé with a warm, woody aroma reminiscent of tonka. In tradition it is associated above all with grounding, followed by protection and cleansing – a steady, guardian-like character rooted in the forest. Indigenous peoples regard it as a sacred medicine of the rainforest.

Rainforest wisdom
“The tree that cannot be killed”
Cumaru is one of the tallest trees of South America, rising 40–50 metres above the forest floor. Indigenous peoples call it “the tree that cannot be killed” and see its spirit as one of the great teachers of the rainforest. They believe that the strength of the tree lives on in its ash – and so in every Rapé made from it. Its force is direct and earthy; in greater strength it is known to lead into a deep trance.

The botanical story
Dipteryx odorata
Cumaru, also known as Brazilian teak, is a giant tree of the legume family. Its seeds are the tonka beans, prized around the world for their sweet, vanilla-like scent – which is why Rapé Cumaru carries a subtle tonka note.
For this blend, the Huni Kuin prepare a fine ash from the bark of the tree, according to ancestral knowledge.
