Jatobá Kuntanawa — strength of the grandfather tree
Rapé Jatobá Kuntanawa is a rare blend of the Kuntanawa people of Acre, Brazil, made with ash from the bark and resin of the mighty Jatobá tree (Hymenaea courbaril). Jatobá Rapé is honoured by several Amazonian peoples – among them the Huni Kuin, the Kuntanawa and the Guarani-Kaiowá.
It carries a powerful yet caring energy – an open heart with firm boundaries. In tradition it is associated with the heart, emotional balance and inner harmony, with grounding and spiritual strength, and it supports meditation, focus and ceremony.

The people behind the blend
The Kuntanawa – a people reborn
The Kuntanawa are an Indigenous people of Acre, part of the wider Pano cultural family of the western Amazon. Nearly erased during the violence of the rubber boom, their descendants publicly reclaimed their identity in the 2000s and now lead a remarkable revival of their language, songs and ceremonies along the Tejo River. Their traditions are rooted in forest wisdom, prayer and the protection of ancestral lands – a struggle for territorial recognition that continues today.
For them, Jatobá is the grandfather of the forest – strong, wise and protective. Its ash is prepared with prayer and sometimes combined with other plants into a harmonious blend.

The botanical story
Hymenaea courbaril
Jatobá is a tall, long-lived tree of the legume family found across tropical South America. Its hard wood is known as Brazilian cherry, and its fragrant resin has been treasured for centuries as South American copal.
In Amazonian folk tradition, its bark and resin are valued for clearing a blocked nose and releasing mucus. The Kuntanawa prepare a fine ash from its bark and resin for this Rapé.
